The world's first ship-to-ship green ammonia bunkering was completed on Oct 13 at an anchorage in Zhoushan, Zhejiang province, marking a milestone in green marine fuel commercialization.

Shenghang Yongle, the world's first dedicated ammonia bunkering vessel, delivered 1,000 metric tons of green ammonia from the Songyuan Hydrogen Energy Industrial Park project in Jilin province, developed by China Energy Engineering Group, to Mineral Europa, an ammonia-powered vessel owned by Belgium's CMB.TECH. The ship will cross the Pacific to Australia for commercial shipping.

Carried out by China Energy Engineering Group Hydrogen Energy Co and CMB.TECH, the operation connected the full green ammonia value chain, from production and transportation to bunkering and application, achieving six global firsts. These include the first take-or-pay sales contract for green ammonia in ocean shipping, the first commercial ship-to-ship bunkering at an anchorage, and the first dedicated ammonia bunkering vessel.

Produced in Songyuan, Jilin, the green ammonia was transported by LNG tank trucks to a tank farm at Nanjing Port, then shipped by Shenghang Yongle to Zhoushan for bunkering.

To date, 7,000 tons of green ammonia from the Songyuan project have reached the Nanjing tank farm, with further bunkering planned in batches.
