A green fuel breakthrough has connected Northeast China with one of the world's busiest shipping hubs.

On Aug 17, Shanghai Yangshan Port completed an 8,000-metric-ton green methanol bunkering operation, the largest single green methanol port bunkering operation recorded worldwide to date. The milestone marks a major step toward the large-scale adoption of green clean fuels in China.

The methanol was produced in Taonan, Northeast China's Jilin province, where a green methanol plant combines renewable electricity with biomass resources. Using local crop straw and wind and solar power, the facility's production process cuts carbon emissions by more than 65 percent compared with conventional methods.

A green fuel corridor jointly developed by Jilin, Liaoning, and Shanghai has helped establish a stable supply chain linking production, transportation, storage, and bunkering, enabling green methanol to travel from northern production bases to southern markets.

The second phase of the Taonan green hydrogen and biomass-based green fuel project is scheduled to begin construction on Aug 20 and is expected to be fully operational in 2028. It will have an annual capacity of 200,000 tons of green methanol and 10,000 tons of sustainable aviation fuel.
