Jilin Oilfield is giving a new lease of life to a mature oilfield by combining oil and gas production with renewable energy, offering a replicable model for the low-carbon transformation of mature oilfields.

At the 2026 China Petroleum Open Day on Aug 6, the oilfield showcased three flagship projects: the Honggang low-carbon transformation, the Xinbei smart microgrid, and a 450-megawatt wind and solar energy project.

In the first half of 2026, Jilin Oilfield generated 800 million kilowatt-hours of green electricity, with nearly 30 percent consumed locally. This saved more than 100 million yuan ($14 million) in production costs while cutting carbon emissions by 160,000 metric tons.

The oilfield is also turning idle well sites and unused land into platforms for renewable energy. The Xinbei project integrates wind, solar, energy storage, and heating, enabling the block to operate independently of the external grid with a 100 percent clean-power supply. Once fully operational, the 450-MW Qian'an wind and solar project is expected to generate more than 900 million kWh annually and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 700,000 tons.

Meanwhile, Jilin Oilfield is fast-tracking its efforts in carbon capture, utilization, and storage. More than 4.3 million tons of carbon dioxide have been injected to date, placing its injection capacity among China's largest.

With more than 20,000 oil and water wells connected to an intelligent IoT system, the oilfield is using technology to improve efficiency, reduce emissions, and build a greener future.
