International students from the College of International Education at Jilin University (JLU) experienced China's rural vitalization during a two-day visit to Tongyu county in Baicheng, Northeast China's Jilin province, from Oct 11 to 12.
The first day highlighted the university's achievements in science-driven poverty alleviation, where students visited the JLU Science and Technology Backyard and later the corn demonstration fields led by Professor Cui Jinhu from the College of Plant Science. Growing vigorously on formerly saline-alkali land, the fields showcase the remarkable influence of tailored seed improvement and advanced cultivation techniques.

Through firsthand explanations from field experts, students gained insight into how scientific innovation has transformed low-yield land into productive farmland – an inspiring example of research empowering rural development.
On the second day, the group visited Xianghai National Nature Reserve, witnessing the breathtaking release of red-crowned cranes on Xianhe Island, then climbed Lanhai Pavilion to take in sweeping views of the autumn wetlands.
Blending lessons in scientific innovation with ecological exploration, the Tongyu trip gave these students a deeper, more authentic understanding of China's development path.
