Changchun Film Group has announced the nationwide release of the film 731 on Sept 18, to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45). A powerful new poster was unveiled on Aug 4, boldly confronting the wartime atrocities committed by Unit 731 of the Japanese army.
Set in Harbin's Pingfang district in 1945, just before the end of WWII, the film tells the harrowing story of civilians lured into Unit 731's program – only to become victims of horrific human experiments. Centered on characters like Wang Yongzhang, a humble street vendor, the film captures the suffering, awakening, and defiance of ordinary people under extraordinary cruelty.
The film speaks for history and testifies to the truth. Its newly released poster, in stark red and white, shows a chilling confrontation between a Japanese soldier in protective gear and a prisoner engulfed in flames. These flames reveal glimpses of crematorium smoke, brutal outdoor experiments, and mass graves, burning images that sear the conscience.
