On May 18, Jin Mingnan and Gao Jindan made a historic contribution to Ji'an Museum by donating a precious gold seal that belonged to the Loyal Marquis of Gaogouli (Goguryeo) from the Western Jin Dynasty (265-316). This extraordinary artifact, the only known gold seal issued by the Western Jin Dynasty to Gaogouli, is a landmark addition to the museum's collection, dramatically enriching its representation of ancient Northeast Asian diplomacy.
Before the gold seal's return, Ji'an Museum housed only four seals, all in bronze, with just one from the Goguryeo period. The museum plans to nominate this gold seal, which fills a significant gap in the museum's inventory, as a first-class national cultural relic, given its exceptional historical and artistic significance.
More than a prized exhibit, the seal enhances the museum's academic stature. Alongside the earlier bronze seal discoveries, it serves as critical evidence of the Western Jin's administrative authority over Gaogouli.
To celebrate the seal's acquisition, the museum will host a formal accession ceremony and a high-level symposium featuring leading experts from China and abroad. The seal will become a central exhibit in the museum's upcoming renovation, with educational programs targeting students to promote historical awareness and cultural preservation.
