The 23rd China Changchun Jingyuetan Vasaloppet International Ski Festival opened on Jan 4 in Changchun, capital of Northeast China's Jilin province.
Over 2,000 athletes from various countries competed in the famous cross-country ski race amid the snow-covered forests, while thousands of spectators witnessed a dazzling snow world in the form of a course especially crafted from 100,000 cubic meters of snow and 3,000 cu m of blue ice.
Adding to the vibrant atmosphere, international students from Jilin University cheered enthusiastically for the participants, bringing a unique cultural touch to the festivities.
The event includes five race categories – 50 kilometers, 25 km, 6 km, 1.5 km and 0.3 km race – catering to skiers of all skill levels. Advanced timing systems, comparable to those used in the Beijing Winter Olympics, ensure a professional experience for competitors.
The festival's signature medal, featuring a rotating snowflake design, symbolizes its 23rd edition and reflects the harmony of tradition and innovation.
Originating in Sweden in 1922, the Vasaloppet is the world's oldest cross-country ski race. Since 2003, its Changchun counterpart has become a hallmark event, blending Nordic tradition with Chinese winter culture to promote sportsmanship, tourism and global exchanges.
