Chagan Lake Winter Fishing
|Chagan Lake Winter Fishing is a traditional fishing custom practiced by fishermen on Chagan Lake in Songyuan city. It involves rituals, awakening the nets, breaking the ice and casting nets – resulting in tens of thousands of pounds of fresh fish being harvested, all the while showcasing rich local ethnic characteristics. Despite the passage of time, this ancient winter fishing method has been passed down to the present day.
In 2006 and 2009, Chagan Lake Winter Fishing set two Guinness World Records for "the largest scale of winter net fishing."
To preserve this ancient fishing method, the Chagan Lake Fishing and Hunting Cultural Tourism Festival is held annually from Dec 28 to Feb 28. This spectacular winter fishing event attracts an increasing number of domestic and international tourists – both at home and abroad.
In 2008, Chagan Lake Winter Fishing was officially recognized as a national-level intangible cultural heritage item by the State Council.
