Jilin city's rime is a unique ice and snow spectacle.

Every winter, the temperature difference between the Songhua River, which flows through the city and the surface of the ground is often around 30 C. This causes a large amount of persistent fog to form on the river.

Under the influence of certain atmospheric pressures, wind directions and temperature conditions, the fog on the river surface cools down and rapidly condenses into spectacular rime which blankets the surrounding tree branches, creating unforgettable scenes along the river.

Rime – tiny, exquisite filigrees of ice - forms when water droplets in fog freeze on objects they get in contact with. Jilin's Rime is known as one of China's four natural wonders – along with the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River, southern Guilin's Karst and Rivers and the Stone Forest in southwestern Yunnan province.

Jilin rime is renowned for its long duration, thick layers and high frequency of occurrences. It mainly appears from late December to February in the following year, making that the best time of the year to appreciate this outstanding natural phenomenon.
