To alleviate the meal difficulties faced by elderly people living alone, Changbai county has invested 1.7 million yuan ($237,567) to establish the Changbai County Huimin Canteen. It officially started operating on Nov 3, 2022.

The canteen is open to all elderly people aged 60 and above in the county, with each meal priced at no more than 10 yuan. For individuals aged between 60 and 69, the price is 7 yuan per meal. For those aged 70 and above, low-income households, and severely disadvantaged individuals, the price is 5 yuan per meal. People aged 90 and above can dine for free, with the remaining meal costs subsidized by the county's finances.

Since its opening, over 4,300 dining cards for the elderly have been issued, and an average of around 350 elderly people are served meals daily. To date, the canteen has served over 63,000 elderly individuals.
