Da'an city in Northeast China's Jilin province, boasting the largest area of saline-alkali land in the province, has taken on a new look with improvement experiments of saline-alkali land carried out in recent years.

The provincial natural resources department has set up an experimental demonstration base for saline-alkali soil improvement in Huzhu village in Da'an and has introduced a social investment of 130 million yuan ($19.25 million). The construction area is 5,200 mu (347 hectares), and the newly added cultivated land area is 4,200 mu, including 4,000 mu of paddy fields and 0.02 million mu of dry land.

The project started in March this year and full-scale planting was completed in early June. Basic construction is expected to be completed in October, and soil improvement and soil fertility will be carried over the next three years.

This year, Jilin province accelerated the implementation of its major grain projects and continued to cooperate with the Northeast Institute of Geography of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in black soil projects.

Da'an city alone has added 1,735 hectares of arable land through the implementation of the comprehensive land improvement project, becoming a new growth pole for grain production in the province.
