Northeast China's Jilin province has actively seized upon opportunities that are presenting themselves and has reportedly launched and constructed a raft of carbon fiber precursors, carbon fiber and composite materials production plants.

Currently, Jilin province has an annual production capacity of 60,000 metric tons of carbon fiber precursors and an annual production capacity of 25,000 tons of carbon fiber, ranking it first in the country.

Last September, a major carbon fiber composite project being developed by Jilin Chemical Fiber Group Co was launched in the Jilin Economic and Technological Development Zone in Changchun city in Jilin. The project covers an area of 134,000 square meters and has a planned total investment of 1.6 billion yuan ($252 million).

The new plant is one of the key projects leading Jilin province's efforts to build the new China Jilin National Carbon Fiber Industrial Park and is part of the development of a carbon fiber industry supply chain.

The project's products are to mainly supply the new energy industries – including wind power and optoelectronics, and will also play a role in the field of buildings reinforcements.

In the areas of non-metallic minerals such as graphite, basalt and silicon chemicals, Tonghua city in Jilin, relying on its resource advantages and strong industrial foundation, has implemented a new materials industrial development project. It has also promoted the large-scale development of the new materials industry and constructed a new materials industry production base.

The large-scale ultra-high-power graphite electrode plant, to be operated by Zhongyi (Jilin) New Material Technology Co, has a total investment of 2.04 billion yuan. After the plant starts operating and ramps up to full production, it is expected to achieve annual output worth 5 billion yuan.
