Ulger music originated from the anthems of ancient Shamanism and was later used in various aspects of Mongolian people's lives such as epic singing, wish songs, folk music and ritual music.

"Ulger" means "story" in Mongolian and the Ulgers are often performed with a horse head string instrument -- a traditional Mongolian musical instrument.

The music form was selected as one of the first national intangible cultural heritage of China in 2006.
