Red peppers in Taonan, in Baicheng city in Northeast China’s Jilin province recently entered harvest season, according to local reports.

Taonan city, located in northwestern Jilin province, boasts a long history of planting red peppers and locals began to process peppers nearly 100 years ago.

Since the 1970s, the government of Taonan has paid close attention to its pepper industry, contributing to the rapid development of the Taonan pepper sector.

In 2008, the Taonan pepper was officials approved by the country’s agricultural department as an Agro-product Geographical Indications product.

With strong piquancy, fragrance and a rich pigment and rich in vitamins, the Taonan pepper is popular in the global market, especially in South Korea, local officials said.

It is estimated that around 80 percent of exported peppers produced in Taonan every year are sold to South Korea.
