With a total area of 1,055 square kilometers, the reserve is located in Tongyu county of Baicheng city in Jilin province, in the middle of the Horqin Grassland.

The main protection targets in the reserve are red-crowned cranes, white storks and other rare birds and their ecological habitat.

Sand dunes, elm forests, vast grasslands, cattail grass and reed marshes, and lakes and waters are alternately distributed in the reserve, forming a typically diverse wetland landscape.

The rich resources make the reserve a peaceful place for birds to breed and live. It is also a must-go place for migratory birds during the spring and autumn migration.

There are 297 species of rare birds in the reserve, including six species of cranes that are important for protecting the ecological environment. They are known as a "wetland indicator species".

Currently, among the nearly 2,000 red-crowned cranes that are protected as rare birds in the world, more than 200 are thriving here.

The reserve was included in the list of World Important Wetlands in 1992.
