The reserve is located in Zhenlai county of Baicheng city in Jilin province, at the intersection of the Nenjiang River and the Taoer River.

Across the river from Heilongjiang province in the east and adjacent to Inner Mongolia autonomous region in the north, it serves as a shining pearl on the Horqin Grassland.

It is a paradise in which cranes and other birds can fly freely. The original and primitive ecological environment and modern tourist facilities make the reserve a famous tourist and bird-watching destination.

The reserve has been included in the list of international important wetlands by the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.
