Jilin University marks 70th anniversary of its Mathematics major

Jilin University, located in Changchun, the capital city of Northeast China's Jilin province, celebrated the 70th anniversary of the establishment of its Mathematics major with a ceremony held on May 7.

The School of Mathematics of Jilin University is an essential base for Chinese mathematics research and personnel training. It is among the first batch of major national discipline strategic layouts.

Zhang Xi, the Chinese Academy of Sciences academician and president of Jilin University, delivered a speech. He wished that the mathematics discipline of Jilin University should inherit the fine traditions of the older generation of mathematicians, continue the past and open up the future.

In 1952, during the adjustment of colleges and schools across the country, the State selected 14 teachers from critical universities such as Peking University and Tsinghua University. It established the Department of Mathematics of Northeast Renmin University (now Jilin University). This marked one of the earliest science disciplines established by the university.

In 2019, the mathematics discipline of Jilin University entered the top 1 percent of ESI rankings in the world, and the mathematics and applied mathematics major was selected as the first batch of first-class undergraduate majors in the country.

In 2020, Jilin University's School of Mathematics of Jilin University led the Jilin National Applied Mathematics Center. The same year, it was selected into the country's first batch of "Pilot Programs for Enrollment Reform of Basic Subjects."
